Legends of Tomorrow – S5 Ep5 – A Head of her Time Review

The year is 2020 and the place Northumberland. Constantine, Charlie and Gary are still at the house and trapped with the spirit of Astra’s mother, Natalie. The mission that Constantine has and will always choose is to save Astra and if that means facing Natalie and his past Constantine will do it.

Meanwhile on the Waverider, Sara has gone to Star City and has left interim Captain Ava in charge. It isn’t long before another Encore is spotted in Paris in 1793. The team have to find the Encore before thousands die. Behrad convinces a reluctant Ava that Zari should join the team and it isn’t long before the team find Marie Antoinette who is using her magic charm to 1) get people to party like its 1793 and 2) to party until they die. Nate and Behrad give into Marie’s charms and join the party. So it falls to Ava and Zari to tempt and lure Marie away. It isn’t long until Marie loses her head literally and is on the Waverider. It seems interim Captain Ava’s first mission went off without a hitch. But this is the legends and nothing is ever as it seems.

Back in Northumberland Charlie and Gary are learning that Astra’s mother Natalie and Constantine have a long history. They were childhood friends and it was incredibly sweet to see a young Constantine wish to see his mother again. However as the memories pass you learn that Constantine picked magic over his love for Natalie and she left. Constantine turned to the dark and when Natalie died in an accident her husband Alex begged Constantine to bring her back but it went wrong. Natalie’s spirit takes over Charlie and once Constantine admits the truth that he wanted to prove that he made the right choice – magic over their future that Natalie admits that she may have a way to save Astra and this is the reason Charlie is there. The Loom of Fate could have the answer.

Astra, meanwhile, is angered by the failure of her Encores to date and seeks a way to kill Constantine. She has Constantine’s coin and she enlists the help of the Coin Maker to take her hellish revenge.

Back on the Waverider and with Marie ‘s head and body now occupying separate rooms Zari prepares to leave for her party in 2044. However with encouragement from Marie she glimpses her future which shows ruin because of perfume that damages peoples sense of smell. It is at this point that Zari realises that Marie’s power was magic perfume that can charm all of those around. Zari steals the perfume for her launch. However she spills the perfume and Zari becomes too popular. Its up to the team to save her. Ava and Zari jump into a fountain to desperse the perfume. Back on board Marie’s body has escaped and has Mick’s gun and is attacking Mick and Ray. They launch a couter attack and Marie (well part of Marie) is thwarted.

Constantine quizzes Charlie over Natalie’s revelation and Charlie admits that she had destroyed the Loom of Fate and scattered the pieces across the multiverse. However in recent months Charlie had felt a change and that her past is coming back to haunt her.

Back in hell Astra reaffirms her wish to kill Constantine by speeding up the onset of lung cancer. As the coin maker turns the wheel of hell on Constantine the illness speeds up and Constantine starts to cough up blood and feels the quickening effects of the illness whose onset has been triggered by an evil Astra. Constanine collapses and his fate and life hang in the balance.

This weeks epsiode saw Zari open up about her life. It saw Ava step forward to lead and to also revealed more of Constantine’s history which saw a sad and lonely existence with missed opportunities and suffering because of those choices. At the end of the episode we aren’t sure of Constantine’s fate. Will Constantine make it or have his Dangerous Habits caught up with him at last? Is Astra actually worth saving? The girl he knew has gone and has wished him a horrific end. Lets hope that fate can intervene and that the team will find a way of helping because regardles of his protests Constantine is now and will always be a legend.

Legends of Tomorrow – S5 Ep4 – Slay Anything Review

I can tell straight away that this episode is going to be one of my favourites this season. It has everything – love, friendship, bad 80s fashion, a Belinda Carlyle throwback and a race against time to save the day. Cue Central City 2004 and the execution of Freddie Meyers – a serial killer who went on a killing spree at his prom in 1989. Freddie is brought back from hell and this alerts the team to try and stop a second round of killings.

The team head to Prom at Freddie’s former high school. The memorial prom is being attended by all of Freddie’s former class mates and its likely that revenge is in the air. Meanwhile Norah is back and exhausted and disillusioned with her fairy god mother role and wishes she could really help the kids.

Within minutes of arriving Freddie has already claimed further victims. Heaven isn’t a place on earth for these prom goers. One of the new victims was Tiffany the final girl who survived the last spree. Freddie has the school in lock down with Sara, Ava and Mick trapped on the inside with Nate and Ray outside. Constantine has removed hmself from the team and is in 2020 trying to find a solution to the Astra problem. Constantine has gone home only to find shape shifter Charlie squatting and has taken on Constantine’s form – robe and all.

It becomes clear to Sara that they are powerless and the only way to stop Freddie is to go back to 1989 and to try and reform a young and pre-killer Freddie. Nate and Ray arrive and see that Freddie is a shy and cautious teen who is the butt of everyone’s jokes and the target of bullies. The team observe Tiffany (most popular girl in the school) ask Freddie to the prom. The team are suspicious of her motives and think this is what tips Freddie over the edge. However the team have a secret weapon as Norah is drawn to Freddie as his fairy god mother and after granting his wish for a cool suit and ride they arrive at the prom. The would be prank soon becomes clear – Tiffany was to guide Freddie to the middle of the dance floor so they could dump a pile of rubbish on him – bullies at their best. However Tiffany is actually enjoying her time with Freddie and it looks as though the prank has been averted until the bullies pour a drink over Freddie and he leaves. Norah rushes after him and tries to convince him to use one last wish. Freddie is then onstage busting some cool moves and has everyone dancing. It looks as though everything will be ok. Norah is fundamental in counselling Freddie and it’s clear that he is a nice lad who just needs a bit of direction, care and love. Norah seems to have found her purpose at last and Freddie releases Norah as his fairy god mother.

Meanwhile Zari is being her usual self 2.0 and manages to hack the Waverider’s systems and leave the ship. In doing so she has a flashback and seems to recall a snippet of the former timeline. Zari steps directly into Freddie’s limo just as Freddie and his friends are leaving the prom. We see a masked figure approach.

In 2004, the masked killer is still on the loose and has killed Ally, Mick’s school love interest and the team are fighting to stop Freddie. The killer repels Mick’s gun and kills him and Sara and Ava are fighting for their lives as the killer is bearing down on them. In 1989 the masked figure has attacked the limo and Zari, Freddie, Tiffany and their friends have managed to get out. Zari sprays the killer with some scent and it is only at this moment the truth becomes known. Freddie wasn’t the killer – his mum was. He covered for her and took the blame. His mum said she did it for him but when he tells her to stop she resolves to kill them all. Luckily Behrad arrives and uses his totem to save the day. Freddie’s mum is taken into custody and the 2004 killer disappears and the time line is restored with all the new victims being saved. The 2004 prom is back in full swing and Freddie and Tiffany are together. The team take some time out for a reunion and some fun while Mick gets reaquainted with his school love.

Back in 2020 Charlie helps Constantine to face the spirit of Astra’s dead mother. Cue another spell and a ring of fire. Only time will tell how this conversation goes. I guess she can’t tell him to go to hell because he has already been!

So what was this episode really about. We saw Norah try to guide Freddie to self acceptance inspite of everything. It showed that with a bit of guidance and support Freddie could make other choices. This helped the truth about Freddie’s mother to come to light and saved everyone including Freddie who was innocent. The episode showed that sometimes first impressions aren’t always correct as Tiffany soon realised. It also showed the benefits of team work. Zari 2.0 seems intrigued so I’m curious to see the role that she adopts going forward. In terms of Constantine’s individual crusade we shall soon see if this works but in the meantime I’m enjoying the spells and the rings of fire. I hope Constantine doesn’t fall into a burning ring of fire in the next episode.

Legends of Tomorrow – S5 Ep3 – Miss Me, Kiss Me, Love Me Review

So after a tough week what better way to start the second episode of the Legends by going on a hellcation with Constantine. Constantine sees Astra and discovers that her lust for power has taken her humanity away and the only way that Astra will be stopped is by killing her. Constantine briefs the team on their latest hellish enemy and it appears that until a solution can be found for Astra the ‘encores’ will have to be kept on the Waverider.

Cue a time quake in Los Angeles 1947. The team splits up with Nate and Behrad heading to 2044 to celebrate Behrad’s fathers birthday while the rest of the team head to Los Angeles which was characterised by Holywood glamour, crime, corruption and sin. Constantine, Sara and Ray track the magical residue of the dead guy to a PI’s office. All that remained of Webb (of the Webb and Moore PI Agency) was ash as he had been consumed by hell fire. Constantine under the guise of investigating tastes the residue just as Webb’s client tries to do a runner. The client in question is Jeannie – girl friend of a notorious mobster (Bugsy) who died last week but has been resurrected this week with a new philosophy that infomation is power. Webb was helping Jeannie find an escape from her life. Constantine with his best american accent poses as Moore and agrees to help. Straight away the team realise that Bugsy has a weapon from hell that will be difficult to defeat.

Meanwhile in 2044 Nate has finally come face to face with Zari 2.0 and the Z-Nation. The new and altered Zari is consumed by fame. Zari is already testing Nate who is still trying to undestand how their actions altered the time line.

In LA the team have arrived at Bugsy’s club – the Blue Iguana. Ava and Mick are propping up the bar awaiting instruction. Ava is at a bit of a loose end and doesn’t feel needed and misses the responsibilities of the time bureau. The team’s plan to get Bugsy are foiled by the corrupt cops and a need for a distraction to lure Bugsy back to the club is needed. A wasted Ava gives the singing performance of her life. Plan B is to get Bugsy’s gun and Constantine makes a deal with Jeannie. Jeannie who has been used as the object of blackmail by Bugsy has no problem in turning her glamour on Constantine and before we know it Constantine is driving Jeannie and Bugsy to the club. The team overpower Bugsy and take him to the Waverider. Constantine and Jeannie go to Burbank to a graveside but before Constantine can act Jeannie takes the blackmail evidence to use for her own ends. The fate meant for Bugsy catches up with Jeannie and the car explodes. Constantine taste’s Bugsy’s blood and takes Bugsy and the gun back to hell but Constantine in that moment cannot kill Astra and instead reaffirms his intention of never giving up on her.

Nate and Behrad are confronted by Zari 2.0 who has discovered their deception and is about to call her parents when Behrad opens a portal and takes Zari directly to the Waverider. Zari 2.0 is in full melt down mode and its hard to see how Zari and Nate will ever be reunited.

So the 1940s glamour of LA was a fun backdrop for the second episode and any one who has seen The Halcyon would know that Matt Ryan can pull off a killer US accent. Great set and costumes as always. Secondly it appears that Constantine wants to audition for a Legends version of I’m a celebrity get me out of here by eating/ tasting the unthinkable. Those trials would never be the same. In terms of Zari 2.0 the jury is still out. I guess its true that the path, choices and events we experience dictate who we become. Zari never experienced the loss that led her to Nate and the Waverider. The change in the timeline meant that Zari avoided the pain but also meant that she had a different loss by not meeting Nate and the rest of the team. Astra’s soul has descended into darkness and Constantine still wants to save her – but it’s too late surely? How will Nate deal with Zari 2.0 and will Ava find a new purpose? We shall see which hellish soul will be next to meet and challenge the wits of the team.
