Titans – S1 Ep6 – Jason Todd Review

Now as you can imagine from the title this episode is all about Robin, well……Robins!

We’re starting to really focus on Dick Grayson, his back story with the circus and some of his life with Batman and I am loving it for reasons I will get into shortly. First off let’s talk Jason Todd the second Robin, he’s been sent by Batman to give Dick some info about people from the Hayleys Circus being murdered and just so happened to save Dick from the ‘organisations’ hit at the end of the last ep.

Now if you don’t know about Jason Todd his story is a good one, not sure they’ll show much of it on this show so I’ll give a quick break down, he’s the second Robin after Dick leaves Batman, he’s found by Batman when he tries to steal the hubcaps off the batmobile, Batman trains him but he’s very brash, brutal and almost uncaring due to being neglected and living on the streets, you see some of this in this episode but his story continues way after when the Joker captures him, beats him and actually kills him, being a comic obviously he come back later and becomes the very popular character Red Hood very much an anti-hero angry with Batman for letting him die, I would definitely recommend checking out the animated movie Under The Red Hood to learn more about Jason and Red Hood.

Again, we are treated to a lot of good fight scenes in this ep, this shows does fighting well! Dick is trying to find the last person from Hayleys Circus that hasn’t been killed, then protect him from the killer who turns out to be the son of the guy who murdered Dicks parents, it’s all very meta!

This episode is very much Dick trying to leave the mantle of Robin behind, many times saying he’s not Robin anymore, this makes me excited as a huge Nightwing fan I’m hoping we get the transition to his own hero this season, even just right at the end of the last Ep would be good enough for me!

We’re starting to get more DC stuff in the show, more Gotham, the Marconi family, a mention of two face and we even get a sneak peak at the batmobile which albeit brief looked awesome like a cross between the animated series and the Adam West versions, very cool

Only 4 eps left in series!! What’s next I wonder?

Titans – S1 Ep5 – Together Review

I loved this episode!!! It was very much a getting to know you ep, with the whole team finally together and hanging out in motel trying to lay low from the psycho family, who now have a new dad thanks to the ‘organisation’.

So Dicks theory is they need to stick together to stay alive and they can only be a alliance, we haven’t quite gotten to team yet, if they know what each other can do, so they head to barn to demonstrate their powers, Kory gives us some of her sun powers but does mention she struggles at night, this come back into play later on. Gar transforms into a tiger, we’ve only seen a tiger from him so far so I’m assuming he doesn’t know how to change into anything else yet, also he has to take his clothes off to transform otherwise he rips them, I see this leading to them getting proper costumes soon. Rachel tries to show them what she can do with some trepidation but she cant quite control whats inside her so needs Korys help to control the darkness, they then ask Dick what he can do and he’s still not giving anything away!

At first I thought they were just gonna gives us small hints of Dick and Korys future relationship, but no, they go full on and just straight up sleep with each other! Things are calm for once.

Then everything changes, the psycho family finds them and we are treated to an amazing fight!! Dick and Kory kicking some serious ass, the fight spills outside with Dick being thrown out a window onto a car, Kory tries to protect Gar and Rachel, but her sun powers don’t work so well at night. With the psycho family closing in we get a smoke grenade and Dick appears as Robin!! He starts beating up the psychos and then inspired Gar transforms into a tiger to help, Kory helps and even Rachel seems to have a handle on her powers and helps out too. We then get an awesome shot of the Titans together standing tall, awesome!!!

The Ep ends with the psychos being tied up and questioned but to no avail, but Dick finds a sat nav and figures out where their boss is, he goes to confront him but they are interrupted by guys with guns from the ‘organisation’ who take out the ‘boss’ and try to kill Dick too, until someone beats them down puts his hand out to Dick and says ‘Hi I’m the new Robin’!!

Bring on the next ep, this was so much fun and its great to see the team bonding, looking forward to meeting the new Robin in the next ep and to getting more info about the ‘organisation’, this show just gets better and better!

Titans – S1 Ep4 – DOOM Patrol Review

This episode was a fun one! We finally get a whole load of Beast Boy and we are introduced to the DOOM Patrol!

So lots happening, we finally get a origin story for Gar (Beast Boy) albeit brief but I’m sure we’ll get more at a later date this was just to kinda give you a hint as to how he got his powers and why he’s where he is, he basically rescues Rachel and takes her to this massive mansion where he lives with a whole group of misfits who are some of my favourites……The DOOM Patrol!

We are first introduced to Cliff Steele aka Robotman, a race car driver who’s body was destroyed in an accident and his brain transferred into a robot and who is the only character to always be a part of the team! next we have Larry Trainor / Negative Man who is basically radioactive to all around him so wears bandages to protect people from his radioactivity but that also gives him special powers, then Rita Farr /  Elasti-girl who was exposed to volcanic gases and thus can change the shape and size of her body or at least once she gets control of her powers she can! and finally Niles Caulder The Chief, a scientific genius that tries to help people who have been afflicted with these issues, he created Robotmans body, Negative Mans bandages and he gave Gar the serum that saved his life but also turned him into Beast Boy.

Now this is obviously and introduction to the team before they have their own series on the DC Universe and gives you a glimpse into how they work as a team, we’ll get some more additions in that show but for now we have the base of the group and it gives Titans a very different but not unwelcome feel in this ep, it’s a lot more light-hearted in places which is a nice juxtaposition to the darkness we have seen so far, but it doesn’t mean it’s all laughs and jokes, we have some questionable decisions by The Chief when he tries to ‘help’ Rachel that don’t go well for him, we do however see the other side of Rachel where she is able to help and heal things.

The episode finishes with Dick and Kory turning up to get Rachel and Dick actually bringing Rachel back from the brink of darkness which was really cool to see the team beginning to need each other and bond on that level. Lastly Robotman says to Gar should go with them and to go have a life cos he can have more than them, so the Titans are all together!!!! And only in 4 eps which I’m very happy about as I had my concerns, they would eek it out for the whole series, so on the whole things are looking great!!

Titans – S1 Ep3 – Origins Review

So, Ep 3 of Titans and things are really ramping up!!

We’re back with Kory (Starfire) still searching for Rachel (Raven) and still with little to no memory, she is at Rachels house all taped off after Rachels mother was murdered, she goes inside looks through some pictures before she’s surprised by some cops, who she manages to take down, it flashes forward to where we left the last episode with the psycho family taking Rachel, Kory follows them for a while until they take a break and goes in to rescue her, she proceeds to destroy half a building and burn the psycho dad to a crisp, not very heroic really but the guy may have had it coming.

Dawn is in hospital hooked up to all kinds of machines but she’s alive, at least for now. We get a flashback to young Dick Grayson not long after the accident at the circus and he’s told that they suspect his parents may have been murdered, but he’s going to be taken in by Bruce Wayne, we then see the Wayne Mansion in all its glory but Dick isn’t happy and runs away by jumping out a window and displaying his acrobatic skills, in the background of the mansion we see a silhouette of Bruce

Kory and Rachel are heading to a convent that they find details of on the back of one of pictures Kory picked up at Rachels house, they stop at diner to grab some food and get into a scuffle with some local bad guys in which Kory kicks some serious ass and saves the nice people in the diner.

Dick is hot on their trail after getting info from the crime scene where Kory rescued Rachel and uses some sweet Wayne tech to track down the car they’re in, we then get another flashback to young Dick walking around some more of Wayne Manor and stealing one of the cars (the car he’s now driving around in)

Back with Kory and Rachel, they reach the convent looking for answers, they remember Kory from a year ago when she was looking for Rachel then and welcome Rachel ‘home’ and show her her old room, Kory also finds out that the key she has is to a locker at a local arcade.

Back with the psycho family minus the dad of course! And they are at what I imagine is the headquarters of whatever organisation they’re from and we meet their boss who’s making eggs but very threateningly lol, he starts talking about Rachel and how she is the key to bringing fourth something to scrub the world clean but it can’t come into our world without Rachels invitation, I’m assuming we’re talking about Trigon! He gives the family a second chance to get her.

Kory and Rachel are at the arcade where Kory has a key to a locker, inside she finds another key this time to a storage locker, Rachel is playing some arcade games and Gar (Beast Boy) turns up, finally!! The two awkwardly flirt before Dick arrives after finally tracking Kory and Rachel down, he says he’s taking Rachel, she says no as she feels betrayed by him and she’s not going anywhere without Kory, she gets upset and unleashes her powers in the car park smashing all the windows in all the cars, they quickly get out of there, leaving Gar staring after them

Another flashback to young Dick after being caught joyriding, they ask why he’s trying to run away, he says he’s not running, he’s searching, searching for the people who killed his parents so he can kill them! Behind the glass mirror we see the back of Bruce Wayne, back at the mansion there’s a letter for dick from Bruce saying ‘revenge isn’t the answer, let me teach you another way’

Dick and Raven are sat in the chapel at the convent and Dick is talking to Rachel telling her he can help her channel her powers, so they don’t take control of her, at which point he hears Kory driving off in his car! She arrives at the storage locker and inside are loads of papers and tapes and stuff all over the walls, with pictures of Ravens and Rachel all put there by Kory it seems with some strange symbols that appear to be an alien language she can read.

Back at the convent the nice sweet nun who has been helping Rachel drugs her and locks her in a room with no windows and no way out!

Dick turns up at the storage locker where he and Kory start looking through all the stuff to find out more of what’s going on, the more Kory reads the more she finds out that Rachel is part of a prophecy and is the destroyer of worlds!!

In the locked room, the dark side of Rachel starts to come out telling her she has no one but the darkness and to let it in! She tries to stop it but ultimately her eyes go black she starts to scream, and a massive explosion is seen at the convent and our last shot is Rachel running away.

Well, what an episode! My favourite so far, things are all starting to click into place and the team is coming together, still a bit Beast Boy light, but I think he’s going to be the catalyst to bring Rachel back from the darkness, also loving Kory learning more about herself and her and Dick working together! Interesting to see Wayne Manor and various Bruce Wayne sightings without actually seeing him lol, I’ll be interested to see if they actually have him in it at all, if they’re going to expand on Dicks training I imagine they’ll have to. This show is getting better by the week, I love it!

Titans – S1 Ep2 – Hawk and Dove Review

So here we are with episode 2 of Titans Hawk and Dove! The episode opens with our introduction to Hawk (Hank Hall) not looking at his best tied up and about to be tortured and it seems like they’re going to be very mature with Titans as he is letting f-bombs go left and right. The costume is looking pretty spot on I really like it. The Lights Go Out and Dove (Dawn Granger) drops into the room and just absolutely ruins everyone, again her costume is looking on point. We cut to Hank and Dawns apartment where Hank is taking painkillers and I totally forgotten he’s played by Alan Ritchson who played Aquaman in Smallville! Also, Dawn is wearing a Superman t-shirt which means Superman exists in the Titans universe.

Hank and Dawn appears to be trying to get out of the vigilante game and Hank seems very broken down, things jump backwards 4 years and we get a cool fight between Hawk and Dove and some bad guys then all of a sudden Robin shows up and starts fighting alongside them, clearly all these guys have history, we see a picture of Hank, Dawn and Dick and another dark haired girl who I’m assuming is Donna Troy?

Dick and Rachel are on their way to Hank and Dawn as Dick says it’s a safe place, they arrive and Rachel introduces herself but when she shakes Dawns hand she gets a flash of Dawn and Dick together in bed. Hank clearly doesn’t like Dick clearly due to their past, Dawn wants Dick to help them with the last big mission before they leave the vigilante lifestyle, but Dick doesn’t want to, tensions run high Dick and Hank get into a bit of a shoving match but Rachel uses her powers to stop them.

We see what appears to be a lovely family in suburbia, who seem to be some kind of sleeper agents who then find and attack Dick Grayson’s detective partner looking for Dick, that seemingly nice family are a bunch of psychos.

Hawk and Dove go to do their final job, but it doesn’t go well and they get cornered and things look like how to go south but then Robin turns up and takes out all of the guys brutally, so brutally even Dove mentions that she’s never seen him like that before.

Rachel finds a letter that Dick has left for asking Hank and Dawn to look after her with some money, even though he had promised not to leave her he was going to anyway. Things are not going well for the group and then it gets worse when the Psycho family turns up!!

They beat up Dick and Hank and they throw Dawn off the roof, then they find Rachel and take her, when Dick and Hank come to they run downstairs to find Dawn is in really bad shape and it doesn’t look good for her Dick starts chest compressions to try to keep her alive, up on the roof a Raven flies into shot then it fades to black.

This was a great episode, a solid continuation from episode 1, Hawk and Dove were great and their costumes look amazing, super close to being comic book accurate. The expansion of Dick Grayson’s character is great, how dark he’s become after working with Batman for so long, he’s clearly having some issues coming back from the brink. I like the introduction of Hawk and Dove but there was no Starfire or Beast Boy in this ep so I’m hoping we get more of them soon, so far I’m really enjoying the direction this show is going so bring on episode 3!!
